tedd.it is not the only teddit instance, nor even one i knew, with the main one being teddit.net. that being said its heavily unusable in its current state without running your own personal instance to stay under the api limits https://codeberg.org/teddit/teddit … that being said, screw that noise, im here instead.

Thank you for clarifying! I definitely was thinking it was all teddits and not just an individual instance.

It is all teddits.

The shutdown notice you link to only concerns the tedd.it instance not teddit as a project. Of course the other instances face the same issues though, so these alternate reddit fronts will probably still take a huge hit in user interest and development or even wind down since spinning up your own instance is to much hassle for a lot of people.

Is it weird that before getting to the comments I had this exact same thought too?

Genuinely curious how many apps have been killed by this Reddit cull…

Edit: I think it should just be called spezzed.com and list everything that got ‘spezzed’

Do you think it’s spezzed or spezed? i.e two zz or one?

Two zs, otherwise it’d be the past tense of speze.

This is fantastic name! The verb form of fuck /u/spez

Unfortunate but inevitable given the API changes. I only used teddit for a short time to check on a few subreddits during the protest/blackout period. This really marks the end of me visiting reddit in any form or fashion now.

You all need to find the courage to close with reddit forever. It’s done, don’t you see it? Everything was taken away from apps to moderators power, purge of old messages, and soon the reward system. What this suppost to mean? What else will be removed? It is in falldown.

They should’ve done it during the protests. Either actually threaten to walk out or engage in malicious compliance like r/PICS, even if Reddit does replace them with paid moderators, and direct people to alternatives.

Don’t worry… it’s all being replaced with direct payment to approved contributors… going tiktok model, it can get way shittier, and it will.

Luckily I won’t be there to see it because I no longer give a fuck about Reddit whatsoever. It sucks that much of the knowledge contained there will ultimately die, but we must build anew. It has been a learning experience that hopefully enough of us have taken to heart that a new and better way of doing things will stick.

I would like to, but the fact is lemmy is 99% shitposts and memes. Don’t get me wrong, I like that stuff but I also need to know wtf is going on in the world. Since losing rif and refusing to use the official app, I am now basically getting news when my wife sees it on Facebook, which means it’s old news by then.

We all have our bias. My lemmy is not like that. Which means you’re not curating your feed.

I block every community with content I’m not interested in. It works. My lemmy feed is very interesting.

Any tips you can share on how you did this? I’m totally new to Lemmy, and I’m having a hard time finding and/or discovering interesting communities.

They’re saying the opposite. They block things they aren’t interested in.

You’ll have to look for the ‘block community’ button. Depending on the UI you’re using, this can be in different places.

In Lemmy’s default UI, you first click the part under the title identifying the community under which it was posted. Let’s say it was posted under darkmemes@lemmy.world. What you do is:

  1. click that darkmemes@lemmy.world;
  2. on the community page, you then click the ‘block community’ button on the sidebar.

click that button.

On a phone app, the process may be less cumbersome. On Thunder, an Android app, you just have to click and hold the post, wait until a menu appears, and then select ‘block community’.

like this

Boz (he/him)

Same. It might take a minute to curate for the specific news you want, but there are plenty of communities providing substantive news at least daily.

Yeah I get that too, but it just shows we’ve been too reliant on others to generate content for us

If it’s the news you need, there are RSS feeds from news sites, I’ve also subscribed to them after leaving Reddit

Precisely. Sharing your finds and commenting on what others have found is the ideal situation. When only 1% post content, and slightly more comment, it is easy to game the system - like Reddit and these other “socials”. Lemmy’s robustness will be a function of its people.

Unsub from memes. It is so much better.

This. If you’re unhappy with the shitposts, block /c/lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world and like magic, they’re gone.

Lemmy will hit its stride. I did some minor tweaks to my feed and it got a lot better. I’m still getting the lay of the land tho

Do you know if there’s a way to group multiple instances into a “multifeed” like multireddits?

Not yet but it’s been requested a million times. Someone will get to it soon enough, whether it’s the devs or a third party solution.

DELETED

It’s a process. Memes are the lowest common denominator, will get a lot of ppl on the site, then small communities will grow. Some are already useful, I curate a list that I follow and see when I open my app, and I can already see world news like the Italy heatwave, actor strike, etc. at the top. Not perfect, but already beter than 1 week ago.

The reality is that the shitpost and meme communities will be the ones that give birth to the niche communities we need to thrive. It’s easy, low-effort, but fun-enough and engaging enough to get people through the door.

I get my news from the AP and I’m very happy with it. It’s one of the few apps that I allow push notifications for so I don’t even need to check the app to get the top headlines, I just tap on the ones that look interesting and clear the rest.

I am following subreddits related to Gamestop stock and BBBY stock.

Nice presumption. I created two of them on lemmy. But engagement is low so far. That’s the problem with niche communities. With one of them it look 5 years for enough subscribers to happen that there was regular content being posted by annoying other than me.

So is Lemmy going to stick? Have daily users gone down? I hate to say I stepped back to Reddit because there just isn’t enough content on Lemmy for my taste yet.

My guess right now is that it won’t be as big as Reddit. I think we’re in an environment where the network effect is so strong that it is extremely difficult for big players to fail. The type of failure and migration we saw from Digg to Reddit doesn’t seem possible now.

But it might be big enough to be a good replacement for more hardcore users. I personally am using both and Lemmy is maybe 40% of my usage and growing.

Solution to this is to duplicate every Reddit post you create on Lemmy, and tell everyone else to do the same

better solution: instead of creating a reddit post in first place, do it on lemmy. this forces over the long haul people to move because the content and community is there.

True, so how about this: create a Lemmy post, then post the link on Reddit. People eventually get tired of have load a new page every time, and create a Lemmy account

reddit already banned and killed aubreddits who just explained people how to migrate to kbin and lemmy. so i think if you would do that reddit would just start banning people and prevent us from posting any lemmy links. also most users probably wouldn’t bother even clicking on the link since they want the infos directly without having to do a lot of clicks. so it helps more to recommend lemmy to users in comments etc.

Then advertise and market lemmy. Not by literally going on the street with cart boards “use lemmy Plox”, like even sending a link from Lemmy makes Someone question “why everybody is into Lemmy lately? What is it?

That’s how I found out about Reddit anyways. Don’t underestimate word of mouth.

Oh I have been… or was. Then threads came along lol.

But yeah I want to see Lemmy succeed… I love the Memmy app.

Threads lol. Maybe try Facebook, I hear they even have games!

lol it was something new. It’s already filling up with spam and political garbage. Didn’t take long. Why I’m back to see how Lemmy is doing. I love Lemmy and want to see it explode!

Threads is not a direct threat to Lemmy and never will be. Neither Fedverse. The whole point is that it’s like in the old days, decentralized. You don’t like one server? You go to another. Or you make your own. And big communities will always exist that will want to fuck with whoever opposes basic standards. Just like what happened with Spez/Reddit

TWeaK

Threads came and is already on its way out. Lemmy is here to stay.

If you don’t move then you’ll never get more activity, people will move eventually if their favorite apps move to Lemmy or Kbin.

Well, I’m doing my best to get the !openstreetmap@lemmy.ml community started. Once there is enough activity here, the critical mass becomes self-reinforcing and it takes off.

And it’s not as if all of Reddit will switch over right away - Twitter is still somewhat alive too; but Mastodon gained enough momentum now to actually matter and to be at a sustainable level.

That is the logic most people confuse with socially-focused spaces like the fediverse ecosystem. The point is not to create monopolies but to have a diverse information system so no one node controls the flows. Co-existence is the word. The tough bit is to create a space big enough to create healthy information flow without being too big as to monopolize the neighborhood.

The tough bit is to create a space big enough to create healthy information flow without being too big as to monopolize the neighborhood.

It’s much easier when the administrators of the space have altruistic rather than economic motivations. We just need to make sure that the number of nodes continues to grow organically along with the userbase, and we should be alright.

Oh, hey! I’m the guy behind tedd.it. Didn’t really expect to see it here, but thank you for the mention!

I’ve been running tedd.it for just about over a year now, and it’s heartbreaking for me to end it this way. tedd.it was the choice of thousands for a safer, simpler, more private way to browse reddit. I’m a big online privacy advocate, so hosting this instance was a mission for me more than anything: to help others improve their privacy, even if just a little bit.

Sadly, with how much traffic tedd.it is seeing, there is no way I could possibly pay for API access. Even with lots of caching, we’re speaking tens of thousands of dollars at least. With the site constantly rate-limited now, there’s no point in keeping it up - it’s not exactly cheap to host, even before the API changes. I had to make this difficult choice.

It’s worth mentioning that tedd.it is just one instance of the teddit project. Obviously I don’t speak for the entire project, but from conversations I had with other hosts I believe the feelings are mutual. The project is already kinda stale with the maintainer very low on activity, and Reddit’s third party apps ban feels like the final nail in the coffin.

I’m a big supporter of the Fediverse. I think it’s our best attempt at building a better social media for everyone. I’m already on Mastodon and now with reddit going rogue I figured I could use the reach of tedd.it to help more people find their home here.

And for those who asked: why Lemmy? It’s just my personal preference. Kbin is also great! I just found Lemmy more user friendly personally. But hey, that’s the beauty of the Fediverse: we’re all allies here ❤️

Thanks again for the spotlight. Feel free to ask any questions you might have! Cheers ✌️

Thank you!

People like you make the internet a better place.

Thanks a lot. I mostly used tedd.it over the last year maybe more. Was always more stable than teddit.net. is there a way to thank you for your work? E.g. buymeacoffee or something like that?

I also have a question: Do you think self hosted teddit will continue to work for the next years? As I understand it it dosent reach the api limit and is therefore still useable.

Opalium
link
fedilink
110M

Thank you! I appreciate the support. I don’t have anything like buymeacoffee but I still really appreciate it.

As for self hosting, under the current API terms it should be fine as long as you are the only user and use an API key. You’re still likely to encounter some 429s but it won’t cripple your experience entirely.

Hope that anyone who was using it and not switching to lemmy is encouraged to do so now.

Ngl that lemmy home page is offputting to non-techy users

Yes, lemmy does not work for non-techy stuff. Sometimes I want to look up random stuff like getting the best sim plan for international travel or what are the best apps for tracking weight lifting workouts. That kind of stuff is not available if the mainstream is not here. And thus reddit is unfortunately still needed.

It’ll happen with time, but yeah, reddit has had a decade to have any interest about anything to be posted on their platform

I hope so. In the meantime I would love to see a proxy to/from reddit, kind of like how there is bird.makeup for following Twitter people in Mastodon. I don’t care if the discussion on Lemmy doesn’t go back into reddit. It would make the transition easier anyway.

Someone has (or had?) a bot that would repost threads from popular reddit subs. Always saw them in new but without any comments or upvotes. It didn’t interest me, seemed artificial.

I think Lemmy just needs to keep growing organically for now as instance operators and the code devs figure out the scaling problem.

Yes, sure. But it would be cool if we had “proxy” communities for some of the non-techy stuff that I can subscribe to. Just so I can keep in tabs with updates on my favorite workout app, etc.

And if that proxied community ever transitioned over, they could just take over the community.

what are the best apps for tracking weight lifting workouts

I’ve been looking for one as well. I’ve been using Progression for a few years and it has been decent.

That is actually the one I have been using too! But I always keep searching for if there are better ones. Progression would be perfect if they added exercise images, since I am a visual person, and tend to forget how an exercise is done.

Would love to see the developer to move his discussion to Lemmy.

It’s frustrating when so often techy people produce something but don’t go the slight extra distance to anticipate the needs of normal people getting inducted into using the software. You see it all the time.

Every Linux distro until pretty damn recently…

Reddit third party apps migrating to Lemmy might address this

Maybe.

I tried the “old Reddit” Lemmy website today. The first thing it asks you for is a URL? What? I just loaded a URL!

I mean, I get it but it is not a great new user experience.

I also use Voyager which makes Lemmy look like Apollo ( the Reddit iOS app ). It is much smarter as it gives you read only content by default. You only get confronted to use a Lemmy server when you go to post. Before that, you can browse, read, and search without logging in or choosing a server. It is a vastly better introduction.

I’m using jerboa and it’s fine? Can see all the active threads in the Fediverse.

It’ll ask for an instance and the user won’t have a clue

You can first build something you like using yourself, but at some point you should start holding it under the nose of various well-meaning not-so-techy people and watch how they try to use it.

mlmym.org mimics oldreddit. I was turned on to it this morning, please spread the word. It’s like going home. it pulls from whatever lemmy you’re using so you don’t have to worry about losing your stuff.

Yeah, I am really impressed about it, at first I was thinking about what the use of it would be, kind of wouldn’t make much of a difference. Then I tried it out, and it just feels like home, it’s so much more compact, I really love it, and I’ve used it for a couple of weeks by now :)

Tried it last few days and I kind of like it a lot.
