Tunic looks great, I’ve been waiting and hoping it will get a decent sale.

From reading a different article on it, it sounds like there’s a new PSN in-game overlay that’s needed for multiplayer functionality, and it doesn’t work due to some lacking windows components. There’s a chance that Valve will be able to add support for it in the future.

If a company isn’t willing to support steam deck/Linux through an easier support option like proton, I highly doubt they’ll be willing to support it with higher effort native ports.

There's a new beta for Caves of Qud, available by opting into the beta from the game's steam properties. Noteworthy changes for Steam Deck users: * 🚨ALL NEW INTERFACE🚨 Our transformational UI redesign is complete! Fully mouseable, fully gamepaddable, and much prettier, but all carefully designed to maintain the essence of what makes Qud Qud. More polish is coming, but everything functional is in. * Support for Steam Cloud saves. Play between PCs or between Steam Deck and PC, at your leisure There are a lot of other good changes too, [full patch notes are here.](https://steamcommunity.com/app/333640). This patch will exit beta on June 6th.

Most PC games probably won’t support multitouch, I’d guess you’re most likely to find it in games that have a phone version (or started as a phone game).

I don’t know of a good way to identify those games though. My best guess is to look at some of the curated lists of touchscreen friendly games (example 1, example 2) and look for games that are available as a mobile title and would benefit from multitouch support.

For frame rate, I would recommend the settings presented in this video. The video has chapters, so you can jump straight to the recommended setting section. They include battery saver, recommended (40fps), or prettiest (30fps). The higher fps setting may help with combat, but the game is meant to be hard and very punishing. A lot of the game comes from trial and error, and steadily improving your playing and pattern recognition.

For messages, it’s possible a graphical setting might help, but otherwise the deck has a built in magnification tool that may help you. Normally you hold down either the steam button or the “. . .” Button and then press L1 to turn on the magnifier, but if you’re using it frequently you can also bind one of the back buttons to magnify. I would also recommend setting some of the back buttons to toggle between potions and drink them, I found that to be very helpful when playing.

According to the developer: > You may notice that Steam marks the game as 'Unsupported' for Steam Deck. This is due to the Legends co-op multiplayer mode requiring Windows to access PlayStation Network integrated features. They're rolling out a new in-game PlayStation overlay that requires PSN and windows to work, and multiplayer features won't be available without the two. It's possible that Valve will be able to fix the windows incompatibility issue, although there's no hope for the PSN requirement part being removed.

Are you not liking how it runs/performance, or are you not liking the game itself?

We can make suggestions on how to get better performance, but if the gameplay doesn’t appeal to you there’s not much we can do about that.

Where did you see that it’s immutable? To the best of my knowledge, the regular version of CachyOS is not immutable, and I don’t see where it says the handheld version will be any different.

I don’t have a PS personally, but there’s an open issue for failure to connect. There’s a test build of Chiaki there that might fix it, or you can wait for the full release.

Heroic is great, but this does have a useful place. In addition to epic and gog, this also supports:

  • Amazon Games Launcher ✔️
  • Battle.net ✔️
  • EA App ✔️
  • Epic Games ✔️
  • GOG Galaxy ✔️
  • Humble Games Collection ✔️
  • IndieGala ✔️
  • Itch.io ✔️
  • Legacy Games ✔️
  • Rockstar Games Launcher ✔️
  • Ubisoft Connect ✔️
  • Glyph ✔️
  • Playstation Plus ✔️
  • VK Play ✔️

And it makes it easy to make native looking web apps for the following:

  • Website Shortcut Creator ✔️
  • Xbox Game Pass ✔️
  • GeForce Now ✔️
  • Amazon Luna ✔️
  • Netflix ✔️
  • Amazon Prime Video ✔️
  • Disney+ ✔️
  • Hulu ✔️
  • Youtube ✔️
  • Twitch ✔️
  • movie-web ✔️

Finally it imports games installed through the different app stores to make them appear like native apps.

The remote play together integration is great too, because that will easily let you play local multiplayer games online regardless of what store they come from. That alone might make it worth using over heroic for party-style games from epic.

Most noteworthy is it now allows remote connection through PSN, allowing you to connect without configuring port forwarding.

I’m surprised I haven’t heard much about Collabora partnering with Valve before now. From reading their articles about it, it sounds like they’re largely responsible for the Deck’s update framework and for pressure-vessel which is designed to provide a standard linux container for games to run inside of (think of it like a flatpak but just for steam games).

This is a repost of https://sopuli.xyz/post/12466602, so I’m going to remove it. I hope you’ll join the discussion there though!

Yeah, I was looking forward to ZRAM. I know it doesn’t usually help performance (I think Cryobyte tries it on all of his game optimization videos and it never makes enough of a difference), but I figure it will still help with running out of memory.

Some good changes in there. I barely noticed the mura issues outside of a few specific games, but I’m looking forward to seeing how much that’s improved. HDMI-CEC features sound great, I’m curious if that will work with all docks or just the official one.

Edit: if you get double inputs from BT controllers, disable the HDMI-CEC features to fix. One of those CEC features is to let your TV remote control your deck, but it seems to cause double inputs for some people.

I know people are waiting to see if these will have square dead zones, but other than that I don’t know if they’re still doing that or not.

Valve’s big advantage here is the same as it was with the steam deck: they can sell at a loss and make it back on software sales.

A lot of the appeal of consoles is a polished experience and that they’re generally less expensive up front compared to a comparable power gaming PC. Many consoles are sold at a loss to hit that price point. Valve could actually make cheap gaming PCs that can compete in price and offer a smooth user experience.

EOS (which is what it switched to) is also supported on linux. So hopefully this is a temporary problem.

I know it was a pretty early one to support the deck, but games like CS;GO supported Linux for many years before the proton was a thing.

It switched from the standalone version of EAC to Epic Online Services anticheat instead, breaking steam deck support in the process. However, EOS is normally supported on Steam Deck, so this is probably a temporary issue and will hopefully be resolved by either Valve or Respawn/Epic. We'll just have to wait and see. *Edit:* this is reportedly now fixed on proton experimental

It looks great, I’ve been looking at getting it since the second wind video on it.

Did it have a good sale? I’ve been waiting for a sale (or the mobile version) myself.

I’m really interested in Mr Sun’s Hatbox actually, I’ve played some of his previous games and they were really good. I take it you recommend it?

Yeah, I know YLAD has a stretch of fights/boss fight/cutscenes that took nearly 2 hours without being able to save. The deck being able to sleep mid gameplay is the only reason I was able to make it through. YLAD cutscenes are also super sensitive to instability from undervolting, I kept having cutscenes freeze for me but it turns out that I needed to reduce my undervolting setting a little.

Great games though, I recommend them both.

There’s a flatpak in the discover store called AM2RLauncher. I installed that and right clicked on it to add it to steam. You have to also have the am2r 1.1 zip file.

Once I had it in steam, I used the SteamGridDB plugin to give it some artwork. The in game controls didn’t automatically work with the steam deck gamepad, but if you go to community layouts and hit “show all” there will be at least 3 that change the deck controls to keyboard inputs that do work.

One other note is that the default binding for missiles is control, but for some reason holding control seems to be blocking other inputs preventing you from firing missiles. This could probably be fixed by changing the key, but I instead changed the in game settings to make missiles a toggle ala super Metroid, and that fixed it for me.

In case you didn’t know, there’s an official community for it here on Lemmy.

!pixeldungeon@lemmy.world

The developer of it is active there and everything!

Shattered Pixel Dungeon is available at a flatpak now, and it’s a really great roguelike.

The open source projects I’ve spent the most time playing are OpenMW and Primehack, but they both require you to have copies of the original games.

Sure, and to be honest that was my first thought when I heard about this plugin. But after actually trying it, it’s a much nicer experience for managing my epic games than Heroic in my opinion. Once you have it set up and logged in, this is the closest I’ve come to feeling like the deck has native support for Epic games.

I heard about this awhile back, but only got around to trying it now. Junk Store is a newer Decky Plugin that allows you to view and install any of your Epic games store games right from game mode. You could already install epic games through Heroic and some other tools in desktop mode, but this is one allows easier installation (in my opinion), has full controller support for the library management UI, and will install the new games so that they show up like native steam games in your library. Overall I was really impressed by how well it worked, and wanted to recommend it. To install it, first install the plugin from the Decky store. When you open the plugin, it will show you some different screens, and you need to go to the dependency screen and install all dependencies needed (it will do this for you, you just need to click one button). After that, close and reopen the plugin and it will show you an empty library and ask you to log into Epic. Once you're logged in, that library screen should show all your Epic games, and you can select any of them to install. After the game is installed, it will show up in the "Non Steam" tab of your library. The plugin mentions GOG support, but it's not live yet. Also the junk store has an open plugins system that will hopefully allow other game libraries to all be accessed this way as well.

Main reasons are for better software support and the option to use different desktop environments. For a gaming focused device I think SteamOS is great, but if I was docking my deck and using it as a development environment I would definitely want a less locked-down linux OS.

The appeal of Bazzite is that you still get all the benefits of SteamOS, but you also have more options for software and desktop environment. Other linux distros like OpenSUSE would have a even less restricted OS, although you would be making tradeoffs for some of the other nice things about SteamOS.

As far as I know, you can probably use chromium. You’ll have to set that up yourself though, or use a 3rd party tool.

I agree, but I’m sure there are completely different teams for each and I appreciate this team choosing to support Linux more.

I haven’t tried it, but I’m assuming the steam launch shortcut will have custom launch arguments to launch chrome as a full screen web app instead of the typical browser UI.

I get that, but this is paying to basically rent someone else’s gaming PC so it’s somewhat understandable I think. Main problem I have with most subscription services now is they either are charging a subscription for something that should be a one time purchase, or they’re raising their prices while offering lower selection/worse service.

Proton 9.0 is officially out of beta, and should be automatically downloaded to your deck. Includes performance improvements and fixes for a lot of games. It especially fixes a number of older games that would crash if you had too many cpu cores.
fedilink

GeForce Now is a game streaming service. It was previously possible to use it on deck, but Nvidia is making it much easier to install and get set up. They also recently improved gamepad navigation of their service. To install, go to their [install page](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/download/) in desktop mode and scroll down to the steam deck option. Download and run the script. The advantage of streaming services like this is getting great performance on lower power devices, and minimal battery usage.

There was a delay in federation between sopuli and lemmy.world (probably caused by the kbin federation spam bug) so I’m just seeing your post for the first time now. From first reading your post it sounded like a mod issue, I had to go back and disable several of my cp2077 mods after the last big game update because a lot of them broke. I would probably recommend just disabling it for the time being.

Looking at the mod page for it, the dev said at the beginning of march that he’s going to be releasing a new version of the mod with optional files. Hopefully that will fix your issue once it comes out.

So SteamOS is what’s known as an immutable file system, which is where the system files can’t be modified by the user. This makes the system very hard to break for end users, provides easy system repair options, and is generally nice for a consumer device.

However immutable systems are relatively new, and historically most programs are installed to parts of the drive that are now “immutable”. This is a problem for installing software.

A recently popular software distribution system is called flatpak, and one of the nice things about it is that it installs software to the user section of the drive, allowing it to work for providing software in immutable systems. This is what the Steam Deck uses, available through the discover store. However flatpaks aren’t perfect, they lack some programs available from the traditional sources, and they often have trouble letting programs interact with each other. An easy example of this is a program like a password manager may need to integrate with your web browser to fill in passwords, but the flatpak versions of the browser and password manager can’t actually talk to each other and won’t work together.

Bazzite also uses an immutable OS, but it allows you to install select programs to the normally locked down system partition. This isn’t meant to be the main way to install software, but is a good fallback option for something that isn’t available or doesn’t work when installed through flatpak.

Bazzite also offers alternative desktop environments like Gnome, which has a more touch friendly user interface. Alternative desktops are not currently available for SteamOS in any reasonable way.

Bazzite is an alternative to SteamOS. It had a similar setup of having a separate game mode and desktop, and supports key deck features like suspend and Decky plugins.

It lets you more easily install Linux programs that are difficult to install on SteamOS, and also lets you get a SteamOS like experience on some other handhelds like the Rog Ally.

I take it you’re on the gnome version? I wonder if that might have anything to do with it.

I’m very tempted to switch to Bazzite, but knowing it lacked full support for the OLED Deck has kept the temptation reasonably low. Hearing that it’s almost fully ready for OLED now though is going to bring back those distro-hopping intrusive thoughts again.

> For Steam Deck OLED support they said it's ready to the point that "it should be mostly functional", however there's at least one major issue left which "has to do with audio crashing when switching to Desktop Mode" and some other issues related to HDR support.
fedilink

I’m sorry, I had a typo. It was meant to say stable and beta are both on 3.5.

For those who don't know, the deck has three update channels: stable, beta, and main. The main channel has been on version 3.6 while stable and beta are both on 3.5. The main channel just recently changed to 3.7 though. This is most significant because this likely means we'll start to see 3.6 make it's way into the beta channel, and then eventually released for stable. Some improvements likely coming in the 3.6 update are mura improvements (fixing Samsung display OLED models) and changing swap files over to ZRAM.

Fallout 4 just got updated with a "next-gen" update that got the game Steam Deck verified, fixed bugs, and added some new content. However one of the ways they got the game verified was by disabling the game's launcher by default, the same launcher that is the only way to change graphical settings. You can re-enable the launcher by changing your steam launch settings to `SteamDeck=0 %command%`
fedilink

* Fixed an issue causing no sound output in games that open and close audio devices quickly like Super Blood Hockey * Stability and security improvements This combines updates .18 and .19 from the beta channel. Valve is usually more specific about what "stability and security" fixes include. Between being oddly non+specific and the fact that they pushed this update out as quickly as they did, I have a suspicion they were fixing a significant security issue. So probably best to update as soon as you're able. The sound fix will be nice for affected games as well. I know Dishonored 2 would lose audio after the deck went to sleep, and that's fixed now. I can't confirm if it was actually this patch that fixed it though, but it's a great fix to have regardless. Some cool new plugins from the Decky Store: turn your screen off (OLED only), IsThereAnyDeal, and brightness bar pop up
I was browsing the Decky store and came across the following new plugins: * [MagicBlack](https://github.com/steam3d/MagicBlackDecky/tree/90defd6ebdb1ccf4682980a3fd69256e7195de10) - Turns your whole screen black with a convenient hotkey press. On OLED models this will turn off all the screen pixels, letting you effectively turn the screen off for downloads and other uses. A different plugin called Reshade Deck has been working on similar functionality through adding screensavers to it's plugin, but I'm not sure if that's made it to the stable plugin version yet. * [IsThereAnyDeal](https://github.com/JtdeGraaf/IsThereAnyDeal-DeckyPlugin/tree/27f62cfe8b204a6693a81ea015852760a3884e5b) - when browsing Steam games on the deck, will check IsThereAnyDeal and show you the lowest price at the bottom of the screen. * [Brightness Bar](https://github.com/rasitayaz/decky-brightness-bar/tree/5305b48bdbe4dc43e9fab4e7dfb51467d670fee4) - when turning the brightness up and down by using the `STEAM/QAM + LS/RS up/down' shortcuts, this will display a bar to show what the brightness level is. Looks just like the volume bar shown when changing the volume, and feels like something that should have already been part of the UI. To view decky plugins from desktop, you can view the [stable plugins here](https://plugins.deckbrew.xyz/) and [testing plugins here](https://testing.deckbrew.xyz/). If you specifically want to find the github page for a specific plugin (for more details, bug report, etc) go to [this page](https://github.com/SteamDeckHomebrew/decky-plugin-database/tree/main/plugins) and click on the specific plugin you want.

No Rest for the Wicked is an upcoming ARPG from the devs behind the Ori games. From what I understand, it focuses on a slower more methodical play style than other ARPGs like Diablo. > Moon Studios co-founder Gennadiy Korol said on Xwitter that we can expect around "30-40fps" on the Steam Deck, depending on the quality settings. There are some dips to "20-25fps" and some cinematics might make that number "dip more". But thanks to their "Game Simulation", the game runs at a locked 60fps, so "the game input for the precision combat remains super responsive!". Korol goes on to say that this info isn't "official-official" yet and that they'll continue to work on performance over time. > "Image quality, performance dips and memory will be further improved as we will be patching and improving the game in the future. I really love how this game feels with Deck's locked 40fps screen and our 60fps game simulation and responsive input. So hopefully we'll be able to get to that locked 40fps target sometime after launch." [Here's the game's steam page](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1371980/No_Rest_for_the_Wicked/), it launches in early access roughly 2 hours after this post. **Edit:** early impressions for the game are out, and performance is much worse than how it was portrayed. I would recommend waiting for further optimization and fixes before picking it up unless you play to play on a much beefier PC.

[Guide] How to use Thunderstore mods on Steam Deck for Unity games like Lethal Company
I probably should have posted this earlier back when Lethal Company was more popular, but better late than never. For installing mods, you first need to go to desktop mode and download [r2modmanPlus](https://github.com/ebkr/r2modmanPlus/releases). You specifically want the `r2modman-x.x.xx.AppImage` file from the release page. You can run this app image in desktop mode to access the mod loader, and install mods for the different supported unity games. After downloading the mods you want through the built in downloader, you can click "Start Modded" in the upper left corner to start the game. It will open steam and run the game with the mods. You will usually see a command prompt window open before the game does, this both lets you know the mods are enabled and will let you see if there are any errors with the mods running. After you've confirmed the game will run with mods in desktop mode, the next step is to get mods working in game mode. In R2modman, open the settings menu at the bottom, and look for an option that says "launch options". This will say something like `--doorstop-enable true --doorstop-target "Z:/home/deck/.config/r2modmanPlus-local/LethalCompany/profiles/Default/BepInEx/core/BepInEx.Preloader.dll" -r2profile "Default"`. You want to copy this command, and then go to steam game properties for the game you're running and paste these launch options into the launch arguments box. If you have trouble copying the command, you may need to connect a keyboard or bind "ctrl + sub command c" to one of the deck's back buttons. Now the game should run with mods in game mode. **Troubleshooting:** If you have any trouble and the game is installed to a microsd card, you may need to move it to your internal SSD. Sometimes the resolution of games will get messed up being launched with mods this way. Here are some suggestions if you get weird resolution scaling: * In steam game properties, set the resolution from automatic to 1280x800. Alternative resolution fix: 1. Launch game in desktop from mod manager 2. Open settings 3. set display mode to "Window" 4. From desktop, click top bar of window Lethal Company is running in, then right-click 5. From drop down select "Maximize". Resolution should now be scaled to native. 6. In game settings, select "Windowed Fullscreen", everything should work now without window borders. This guide was largely written from memory, so I may have left out some helpful details. If you notice anything missing or have any issues let me know and I'll try to update it.

FSR 3.1 has improvements to the quality of upscaling, and separates frame generation from upscaling, which will allow the frame generation to be used with other types of upscaling. The article includes a comparison between FSR 2.2 and 3.1, and the improvements are pretty significant. FSR 3.1 will have to be implemented on a per game basis, so it will be awhile before we see it in games. Games that have announced that it's coming in an update are: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon's Dogma 2, Dying Light 2 Stay Human, Frostpunk 2, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

Game update round up: RDR2 and TLoU Part 1 get FSR, Stardew Valley gets big update, Halo Infinite gets EAC, Slice and Dice gets steam version, and DRG Survivor gets it’s first content update
Several games got noteworthy updates lately, and rather than separate posts I wanted to cover them together. * [Red Dead Redemption 2 got updated to FSR2.2](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/red-dead-redemption-2-gets-amd-fsr-22-and-hdr10/) - It already had FSR2 but the quality is better now * [The Last of Us Part 1 got updated with FSR3](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/the-last-of-us-part-i-added-amd-fsr-3-with-frame-generation/) * [Stardew Valley's big 1.6 update is finally out](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/stardew-valley-1-6-is-out-now-player-count-on-steam-explodes/) - Adds a ton of content, too much to list here. There aren't any steam deck specific improvements that I know of, but with how popular it is on Deck I figured it was worth mentioning. * [Halo Infinite got updated to use EAC anti-cheat](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/halo-infinite-added-easy-anti-cheat-enabled-for-linux-steam-deck/) - but it is thankfully enabled on Steam Deck. They also improved their network for online play and improved the Forge. * [Slice and Dice got a massive 3.0 update, and finally got released on Steam](https://tann.itch.io/slice-dice/devlog/701202/30-release) - This is one of my all time favorite games, I can't recommend it enough if you enjoy games like Slay the Spire and Dicey Dungeons. I've been playing it since thanksgiving of 2021, and have never stopped. It's been on [itch.io](https://tann.itch.io/slice-dice) and [android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.com.tann.dice&hl=en_US&gl=US) for awhile now, but it's finally been released on [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1775490/Slice__Dice/) and [iOS](https://apps.apple.com/es/app/slice-dice/id6449848963?l=en-GB). It's possible to run the itch.io version on Deck already, but for some reason the .zip would extract improperly if you used the gui archive manager, requiring people to use the `unzip` command instead. Having it available through steam is a lot easier for most people. * [Deep Rock Galactic Survivor](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2321470/Deep_Rock_Galactic_Survivor/) had it's [first content update](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2321470/view/4140569729628323567?l=english), adding a new biome, new enemies, balance changes, bug fixes, and more. If you have any other games you think deserve some attention for a recent update, feel free to add them.
