Thanks for the feedback everyone! I really thought you got to *be* the plastic duck. I appreciate your help, because I wasn’t expecting a glorified screensaver.

So I've been looking for a nice relaxing and/or easy game. Placid Plastic Duck simulator is now on sale. Steam says it's Playable, but it isn't listed as having controller support. Does anybody have experience with this game on Deck? Does it require keyboard mapping? Is there a community layout? Other not really game specific questions I wouldn't mind an answer for: - Is there a way to check for community layouts for a game without owning it? - Does buying a game that doesn't have a demo and then refunding it because its compatibility isn't great count against me in some way? The refunds policy seems to mention something about abuse, but without a demo I have no other way of knowing. - Any recommendations for relaxing games that are great on Deck? Journey was okay, but didn't capture my attention. I loved RiME. Best wishes and thanks in advance!

You keep saying this but haven’t posted logs showing their side of the conversation. I’ve had my difficulties reaching someone who wasn’t just copy and pasting prewritten responses from a script, but the way you’re avoiding answering peoples questions is suspicious.

Apple will sell you a laptop with dead pixels on the screen and refuse to replace it unless a certain minimum number are dead. I was furious.

Tutorials on how to use and install the legal side of emulators are allowed, it’s when you encroach on copyright that things become a problem. Piracy is not allowed.

Pictures of your Deck running software never published to PC are questionable. My biggest problem with /r/steamdeck is how it made me feel like I joined a bad faith community by buying the device.

There are a handful of moderators and we discuss as a group before we take action. I am not the only voice, so you may opt to wait for others to comment.

I use Deck mainly docked in 1080p. The only issues I have are with very recent games. After some questions and learning, I’ve come to expect not to use it for current big-name games. To that end, well optimized modern games like Powerwash Simulator run fabulous. Most of my Steam library plays very well and is perfectly enjoyable!

I mostly use it to set up Non-Steam Games like Diablo. Once set up, I go back to gaming mode. I once briefly considered using it to resolve a server issue for a business client (by using SSH which for who knows why is expensive as fuck on iPad), but decided against it – I was home to relax not work.

When I first got my Deck I installed several emulators for nostalgia (of course for games I own legitimate versions of), but after recently re-imaging my Deck I haven’t had the urge to do that again. I got what I needed, and may do it again some day; but for now I’m satisfied by Steam games and Diablo.

The way people who cheat talk about input modifier devices leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I can understand why a driver level system was considered.

Cheaters in online games really are the worst type of people because they feel entitled to ruin other peoples games. It’s one thing to “level up” your solo experience. It’s a different thing to intend to ruin someone else’s.

I had problems with the “basic” method of launching battle.net as a non steam game. The Lutris method worked for me.

You might have better luck asking a Yuzu community, since your problem is with Yuzu and not Steam Deck.

That’s a bummer, I wish I had another idea.

As an alternative, you could try Desktop mode and SGDBoop.

Grab SGDBoop from the Discover store, and then enable the shortcut button on the SteamGridDB website. You can browse for your games and apply artwork with a button that appears. For non-Steam games you may have to select the title from a list.

I haven’t found this process to be too painful for the handful of games I have that don’t have grid art.

I’ve played games on both Switch and Steam Deck, and older games the Steam Deck blows the Switch out of the water at 1920x1080. Examples include Avicii Invector, Skyrim, and Yooka-Laylee.

It’s games like Diablo and Metal Hellsinger that make me concerned about Hogwarts Legacy and LEGO 2K Drive.

[Discussion] AAA Games: Worth it on Steam Deck?
A triple-A game I've been eyeing is finally down to a reasonable price on a third party website. But after seeing how much better Diablo IV performs on my friend's Xbox, I am really disappointed in myself for buying the PC version to play on my Steam Deck. I play mostly docked and connected to a TV, so the visual experience is something I value. Diablo IV isn't the first game I've regret purchasing on PC instead of Xbox. For older games, the Steam Deck is great; but it seems like modern games I really need to be wary of. You know what they say, fool me once, strike one, fool me twice... strike... three. Has anyone else had a similar experience, wishing they'd spent the money on another platform? Is there a rule of thumb you follow on what to purchase, where? Would it be okay to list the specific games I'm wondering about for input? I ***love*** my Steam Deck; but I'd rather not feel platform envy again.

Not that you should have to for a confirmed game, but when in doubt ProtonGE tends to fix things.

Warning: The 1TB versions are 65% off their never actually used price of $300. They are only a couple bucks cheaper today than yesterday, and I opted not to buy one because that’s just shady behavior on Amazon’s part.

Tools like CamelCamelCamel can help you avoid getting scammed by Jeffery!

Those should all be built in to Retroarch (Dolphin for GameCube). You will need to ask a piracy community for help with Switch emulation. Emudeck will install just about everything you need except for the parts that fall under copyright.

An update for what I’ve found:

The path Google/Reddit had was invalid, but there was a cache file there that helped me locate the actual directory (at least for my Steam Deck) and identify which layout goes with which game.

The path I found was: /home/deck/.steam/root/steamapps/common/Steam Controller Configs/{USER_ID}/config/

Google’s result was a Reddit post, so it is best to have a copy of this information in lemmy.

Thanks for your help!

Where are controller layouts stored?
I've been instructed by Valve to re-image my deck (in regards to my fans running while idling issue). Does anyone know where custom controller layouts are stored? I can reinstall most things, but I have a number of custom layouts that I'd like to keep without having to reconfigure them all.

Thanks so much for this, it’s what I really wanted to know.

Is the conversion from mAh to Whr something you can explain to a five year old, or should I really just search-engine that conversion if I need to in the future?

The problem is the insane CPU usage by the steam process and it’s associated web helpers as shown in the other comments. The fans are doing what they’re supposed to.

No, you are not understanding correctly.

The Genki covert dock was DOA when I got one, so I don’t trust them.

(1)(deck@steamdeck ~)$ ps -eo pid,ppid,cmd,%cpu --sort=-%cpu | head -n 11
    PID PPID CMD %CPU
   1880 1632 /home/deck/.local/share/Ste 44.5
   1551 1275 /home/deck/.local/share/Ste 15.0
   1643 1631 /home/deck/.local/share/Ste 15.0
   1274 1181 mangoapp 6.7
   1204 1181 gamescope --generate-drm-mo 5.2
   1591 1551 /home/deck/.local/share/Ste 5.2
   1211 1075 Xwayland :0 -rootless -term 5.0

   1213 1075 Xwayland :1 -rootless -term 1.3

Something Valve implemented is out of control. How do I get this to not truncate the command?

Here are the results from top – again just sitting on the main home screen doing nothing at all.

Done several reboots. If I go to desktop mode and kill the steam process, the fans stop.

How do I go about getting the thermal readings?

Fan running when doing nothing?
Today I pulled my steam deck out of my backpack to find that it ate 15% of the battery sitting in the bag. I swear I heard the fan running in the bag. Now, the fan is just running all the time whether I'm doing anything or not. This is incredibly suspicious battery eating behavior that I don't recall experiencing before. I've checked what's running with `top` and the Steam instance and two web helpers seem to constantly be eating up 30% of the CPU. Has anyone experienced this before? Any tips or ideas on how to debug? I don't think the fan should be running all the time, just sitting on the main menu doing absolutely nothing. The Deck has been sitting here on, doing nothing on the home screen for about an hour, and 20% of the battery has been used. This thing would never last 48 hours doing absolutely nothing.
