It’s astounding that Prigozhin was so naive as to think that he could attempt a coup against Putin, and then simply retire in exile to Belarus. Everybody knew something like this would happen, except Prigozhin himself apparently. People have suffered ‘unfortunate accidents’ at the hands of Putin for far less.

Backwards compatibility is the best feature of Xbox, and I don’t understand why Sony is so far behind on this
When I got the XSX recently, it was so I can play Starfield when it comes out. That was basically the only reason. I did not realize the extensive backwards compatibility that this thing has. But since getting it, I've been playing FF13 trilogy, Fable games, Dragon Age series, Lost Odyssey, etc. Basically all games of note going all the way back to the OG Xbox will play on the latest console. Either with the original disc, or you can even purchase them online. The point of my post is I think it's a real travesty that PlayStation doesn't do this. I don't understand it. First of all, you cannot buy most PS1-PS3 games on the digital store. You can't use the discs. The main way to get access to these games is through the top tier of PS+. But the selection is quite limited, and PS3 games in particular are streaming only. With the selection, I want to point out that you can't even play most of the Killzone series on PS+. This is a first party title. There is absolutely no reason that Killzone shouldn't be available. Killzone 1 isn't even on there. A PS2 title that is not graphically demanding. As for the streaming of PS3 games, maybe this was justifiable back on the PS4 because the PS3 has a unique architecture that can be difficult to emulate without performance drops. But with the capabilities of the PS5, it's not credible to claim that it can't emulate a PS3. It certainly could, if Sony wanted to assign resources to make an emulator. I am not a fanboy of one or the other, and I probably still play more on the PS5 than my Xbox, but I think Microsoft should market their backwards compatibility superiority a lot more than they currently do.

I haven’t played Myst since the 90s! Such a great game.

Best sub-20 hour games?
I have been on a kick lately with short games. Because I'm a parent with a hectic job, it's really nice to be able to beat a game in just a few days. I've played both Plague Tale games (10 & 20 hours respectively), Stray (7 hours), and Alan Wake (10 hours). All great stories, very atmospheric, and felt like just the right length for what they were. Any other good story-heavy games that are pretty short? Throw any and all recommendations at me!

As long as you download it now, then you can keep the game as long as you’re a member of PS+. So if you even think you might play it in the future, download it now. Once it rotates off the subscription, then it won’t be available for download anymore (but people who already downloaded it can keep it).

Stray is one of the best short games I’ve ever played.
If you're not familiar with Stray, it's a PS4/PS5 game where you play as a cat. It's a very short game; the main story can be beaten in an afternoon. However, it's available on PS+ (although going away soon), and can be purchased outright for <$30. It's the first time in a long time where I felt totally delighted by how innovative and different a video game was. First of all, playing as a cat isn't just a cute gimmick. The level designs are all about navigating around slums using your size and acrobatic abilities of a cat. Second, the world that the devs have created is so cool. It's like some sort of cyberpunk version of Kowloon Walled City. This game is not Elden Ring. But for an afternoon, it's absolutely worth your time. I can't recommend it enough. Especially if you are finding yourself burned out by the usual types of games. I hope the devs follow up with something else adjacent to this game!

MS should have allowed them an exception to leave the split screen coop mode out of the Series S version (how many people will even use that feature?)

Even if they manage to get it working, this game will now come out later on Xbox, even though it’s not a timed exclusive. So in effect MS is just handing Sony a free timed exclusive for no good reason, because they stubbornly insist on complete feature parity between XSX and XSS.

As we get further and further into this console generation, this is going to happen more and more due to the XSS’s lower horsepower. Microsoft needs to reevaluate their policy for feature parity.

The fact that it’s a wireless controller is what I really don’t understand. Why would you want to risk interference, battery issues, etc?

The development of this game makes construction of a nuclear power plant look timely and cheap.

Pence is a religious zealot, and I think he believes God is calling him to run, so he doesn’t care what the polls or common sense seem to say. He believes that somehow God’s plan will work out. We’ll see how that goes for him…

Can anyone tell me what the “196” community is? If I sort my feed by All, it gives me a ton of memes from there but I can’t tell what it is.

Yeah, the niche subreddits are what I really hate to leave behind. I could care less about leaving r/politics, r/AskReddit, etc. But I’ll miss r/EtrianOdyssey (niche video game series).

But we’ll just have to create these communities on Lemmy. I’m in it for the long haul.

I love the Mystery Dungeon games. Most people know about the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon ones, but there are also Etrian Mystery Dungeon I & II, Shiren the Wanderer titles, Taloon’s Great Adventure, Chocobo Mystery Dungeon, and more!

I like them because they are pretty casual games you can pick up and put down easily, but if you want to get deeper into the strategy, you can. We didn’t get these games in the West until the Nintendo DS era, but they started with the SNES in Japan.

Awesome. The Linux community should be among the vanguard of this whole effort given our philosophy.

Honestly I’ve only been on Lemmy for a few days and I don’t anticipate going back to Reddit. I’ll probably use Reddit for IT help queries periodically but that’s it. I like Lemmy quite a bit more.

Opinions on the Series S? How much “worse” is it than the X?
I have a PS5, but am thinking of getting one of the Xbox series consoles because there are a couple of specific games I want to play (Microsoft Flight Simulator and Lost Odyssey for the 360). Also, it would be nice to have a Gamepass machine. I don't mind the idea of having digital games, but I'm just curious how much of a drop the performance is from the Series X. Especially if anyone has played Flight Simulator on it. Have you regretted getting the Series S, or has it been okay?

I spent years on Reddit and somehow didn’t realize until today what an unscrupulous person he is. And not only unscrupulous, but downright unprofessional.

We can say what we want about someone like Mark Zuckerberg, but he would never behave in the way that Spez did in that AMA. It’s just not befitting of the CEO of a company.
